St Columb’s College was honoured recently to welcome Alumnus Illustrissimus, Sir Declan Morgan, back to his alma mater. Sir Declan is currently serving as the North’s Lord Chief Justice.
Sir Declan spoke with great sincerity to a group of Year 14 students about their career aspirations and encouraged them – by describing his own journey - to be enthusiastically open-minded about what the future might hold for them.
In an engaging question and answer session, Sir Declan fielded insightful questions on a broad range of issues relating to his own time at St Columb’s, his years at the University of Cambridge and his own (varied) career path. Of particular interest to his audience were Sir Declan’s thoughts on a wide range of contemporary legal and societal issues.
Following his ‘interrogation’, Sir Declan joined both students and staff for refreshments, using this informal time to provide further encouragement to our Year 14 pupils as they prepare for their final A-levels exams and the next stage of their educational journey.
Reflecting on his visit, Sir Declan said: “I am always delighted to return to my old school of St Columb’s, and I am grateful to the pupils and the staff for making time for me. I was very impressed by the attitude of the young people I spent time with. They demonstrated a broad knowledge of issues of law, politics and social issues and I thoroughly enjoyed our discussions.”
