The 15th Annual Pope John Paul II Award Ceremony was held in Saint Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, on Monday 14th March 2022. The guest speaker, Father Peter McVerry and Most Rev Donal McKeown, Bishop of Derry and Patron of the Award, presented 288 young people from all over the diocese of Derry and beyond, with their certificates and medals. The young people came from 21 second level schools across the Diocese. They represented 42 parishes in the diocese and 19 parishes from outside the Diocese including 7 Parishes from London, through the involvement of St Richard’s Reynolds Catholic College. In St Columb’s College, there were 8 pupils who overcame the various social restrictions of the pandemic to successfully complete and receive this award.

In his Keynote Address to the Award recipients, Fr Peter commended awardees for their service to their parishes and communities, telling them in reaching out as they have done, they were meeting Jesus in those they had encountered. He encouraged them to challenge the consumerist driven message of the modern world which focuses people inwardly on what ‘I want.’ Rather he called on the young people to look beyond themselves at others, seeing their need first.
